Pilates

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. The Pilates Method is a specific series of controlled movements used to engage the body and the mind.

FYB Pilates emphasizes attention to detail, alignment and the quality of each movement. FYB Pilates works muscle groups, with coordinated effort, through their full range of motion. This increases the awareness of smaller, often forgotten muscles, while larger muscles become leaner, toned, and sleek. The result is a strong, balanced and integrated body.

Myths About Pilates

· Myth - Pilates is probably for someone else.

· Fact- Pilates is probably for you.

· Myth - Pilates is a new craze.

· Fact - Joseph Pilates opened his first Pilates Studio in New York in 1926.

· Myth - Pilates is only great for strengthening the stomach muscles.

· Fact - In general, Pilates benefits people with postural issues and structural weaknesses. Women enjoy the slimming of the stomach and the thighs. Neck and back pain may be reduced. Many people have discovered that rehabilitation after an injury, using the Pilates exercises, led to a swifter recovery.

· Myth - Physical Therapists developed Pilates.

· Fact - This is an easy misconception, because so many physical therapists love Pilates, and so many of them also try to teach Pilates to their patients. An interesting fact is that Joseph Pilates perfected The Pilates Method while working in a hospital. His patients started working on toning their muscles even before they could get up. His patients became so healthy, that during the tragedy of the Influenza Pandemic of 1918, not one patient under Joseph Pilate's care succumbed to the illness.

· Myth - Pilates can't be modified to fit my situation.

· Fact - Pilates is a strength building and toning activity. However, most of the exercises can be modified to fit any level of need. Because modifications are important, and injuries are to be avoided, it is very important to work with a highly qualified Pilates Instructor. Risk of injury is minimized because an FYB Pilates Instructor has had extensive training (more about that later).

· Myth - I can learn Pilates from a Video.

· Fact - The Pilates Method works the larger and stronger muscle groups, along with the smaller and weaker muscle groups, in a very defined and coordinated process. Learning how to use these large / strong and small / weak muscle groups, in an effective process, requires constant cues and specific direction from a live instructor. Videos can serve as a viable part of a follow-up home practice. However, they do not serve as a viable replacement for the actual learning process... unless you looking for a band-aid or a fix. An FYB Pilates Instructor can provide quality instruction with lasting results and incredible benefits.

· Myth - Pilates is only for women … Pilates is only for men.

· Fact - Don't tell male professional boxers and football players (including the Green Bay Packers) that Pilates is only for women … and don't tell female professional dancers and actresses that Pilates is only for men. Great news: Pilates is for both men and women from all walks of life … active and not-so-active.

· Myth - I don't need to do Pilates, because I already do ( …….. ).

· Fact - Pilates is meant to improve your current activities, not replace them. For example, a golf swing improves with stronger abdominals, running improves with increased flexibility, yoga improves with increased stability and balance. All of which are cornerstones of Pilates. Many people cross-train using Pilates as a challenging workout with decreased stress to the joints.

· Myth - Yoga and Pilates are very similar.

· Fact - Concerning the physical aspects of yoga, yoga works with accepting the limitations of your body, while putting you into proper and neutral postural alignment. On the other hand, Pilates constantly strives to improve the limitations of your body and strongly challenges those limitations.

· Myth - All "Certified" Pilates Instructors are the same.

· Fact - At FYB, we get to know you as an individual within a group setting, with fun and gentle guidance, and in a non-intimidating fashion. FYB Instructors maintain the philosophy, "The Person, Not The Pose"® . With attention and modifications, everyone can practice Yoga and Pilates. FYB is a strong advocate of high quality Pilates instruction.

We promote the expansion of more CPT's (Certified Pilates Teachers) throughout the USA, through our CPT Pilates School. The health and safety of Pilates students is of paramount importance to all FYB trained instructors. Additionally, it is projected that in 2007, the majority of new CPT's in Wisconsin will be FYB Program graduates!
